What are Commercial Chillers and How Do They Work?

Commercial chillers use a combination of water, refrigerant, and fans to disperse cold air throughout commercial spaces. Here's how they work:

1. Chillers contain pipes that are filled with water. They have a second set of internal pipes filled with refrigerant. 
2. When activated, the refrigerant removes heat from the water. 
3. The now-cooled water then leaves the chiller and flows to fans and air handlers that are connected to the chiller. 
4. Internal fans then suck air out of your commercial space, pass it over the super-chilled pipes inside the air handler, and then recirculate it back into the building. 
5. This has the same effect as an air conditioner. 
6. The water then flows back to the central chiller where heat is once again removed from it and the process repeats. 
   

Because commercial chillers can only perform cooling services, they must be combined with a heating unit, such as a boiler or radiant heating system. Together, these units can take care of all your heating and cooling needs!
