How Do Ductless Heating Systems Work?

As the name indicates, ductless heating systems don't have ducts, vents, and registers attached to them. Instead, they operate as standalone units with a built-in fan and venting system.

Ductless mini-splits are a type of heat pump, which means they serve as both a furnace and air conditioner. They remove heat from air during summer to produce cold air, and do the opposite during winter to produce warm air.

They consist of an indoor wall-mounted unit that disperses air, and an outdoor condenser that uses refrigerant to heat the air prior to dispersal. These units are connected via a set of pipes that transfers refrigerant from one unit to the other.

Because heat pumps don't have ducts, they are designed to operate in individual rooms, such as living rooms, dining rooms, basements, and similar spaces.
